This brand-new season kicks off with Koen van Barneveld. As a relatively new photographer, his images have captivated many. From drone shots to razor-sharp close-ups, how does he do it? It’s time to get to know Koen better.

1. Who are you, what do you do, and what gear do you prefer to use?
My name is Koen, I’m 36 years old, and I live in the beautiful Betuwe village of Deil. Two years ago, in November 2022, I enthusiastically started photography. While I already took pictures with my mobile phone during my travels with my wife, I had never used a mirrorless camera.
My photography journey began with a Sony A7II, and last year I switched to a Sony A7IV. Over time, I’ve expanded my gear with various lenses, including the Sony 24-105 f4 G, Sony 70-200 f2.8 GMII, Sony 24 f1.4 GM, and the Sigma 14-24 f2.8 ART. Recently, I also added a specially astro-modified Sony A7III, which captures more red light, particularly present in nebulae of our universe and invisible to the naked eye. My latest addition is a DJI Mavic 3 Pro and a DJI Mini 2 for aerial shots.

2. What is your preferred photography style?
I gravitate towards dreamy, expansive landscapes, especially in the mountains. Since childhood, I’ve had a love for mountains, which is often reflected in my photos. I can’t get enough of beautiful waterfalls, deep gorges, imposing peaks, and dramatic coastal cliffs.
I’m also fascinated by the night and enjoy photographing the Milky Way and the Northern Lights. Despite my preference for wide-angle photography, I purchased a telephoto lens (the 70-200) this year to capture more intimate settings.

3. Who is your biggest inspiration in photography?
That’s an easy one: Albert Dros. I’ve always admired his photography style. His colorful, dreamy photos, often with dramatic skies and calm, balanced compositions, inspire me every time to pick up my camera.
When I had been photographing for six months, I purchased his online photo editing course, which opened up a whole new world for me. Besides Albert, I also admire photographers like Daniel Kordan, Marc Adamus, and Alyn Wallace.
4. What is your favorite work of your own?
That’s a tough question. I think my favorite is the Tulip Village 2023. That morning was so special, with the beautiful Aartswoud, the colorful tulip field, the mist, and the warm sunlight. It’s an experience I won’t forget anytime soon.
I also consider my photo of the Northern Lights in Den Oever one of my photographic highlights.

5. What tips or tricks would you share with other photographers?
Tip 1: Get out there! Even with my limited experience, I’ve learned that it’s worth going out, even if the weather doesn’t seem ideal or the chance of a beautiful sunrise is slim. Often, the sky surprises you, and you’d miss out on a great shot otherwise. Don’t let circumstances hold you back, and enjoy yourself, even if the conditions aren’t perfect.
Tip 2: Pay attention to the seasons. In April, the tulips bloom; in August, the heather; in late October, the trees turn orange and brown; and in June, the Milky Way’s core is beautifully visible above the horizon. Each season has its unique features. Look for the beauty of every season to capture the best photos.
Tip 3: Scout your location. There’s nothing more frustrating than arriving at a location and having to search for a good composition while the sky is already vibrant. Walk around the location during the day and look for great compositions, especially for Milky Way photos. Finding a good composition is challenging enough, let alone when you can’t see anything in the dark.
