In just five questions, you’ll learn more about the person behind the camera, their photography style, and the experiences of a featured image creator.
Hi, everyone! It’s great that you’re curious about my story when it comes to photography. My name is Leonie van Oosten, and I live in Goes, Zeeland.
In my daily life, I’m a salon manager at a hair salon and a passionate photographer. Because of my work, I often go out with my camera on weekends, especially on Sundays. To ensure I’m not caught off guard by the weather, I usually check the conditions beforehand and choose my location accordingly.
You’ll often find me at my favorite spot, by the coast, which is one of the perks of living in Zeeland. Or sometimes by Lake Veere. These places never get old, and each time, thanks to the combination of tides and light, they look different. That makes it perfect for me. Photography, for me, is my zen moment. I often go alone or with Jolanda de Leeuw/Karin de Bruin.
Gear:
When I head out, I always take the following gear:
It won’t surprise anyone, but I love taking photos by the coast or water. Using a combination of filters and long exposure times never bores me, and I manage to come home with something unique almost every time. Creating a dreamy effect by softening the water through long exposure is something I really enjoy.
I also love capturing sand patterns (formed by receding water) with a wide-angle lens. Thanks to Karin de Bruin, who taught me to use filters, I’ve learned to create unique images at familiar locations, using the water’s dynamics to produce streak effects.
When people ask me where I prefer to photograph, I always say: “Just put me by the water.” My photo “Het Goese Sas” is a great example of my best results at one of my favorite locations.

Great question! To clarify, I divide my idols/inspirations into international heroes and local examples in the Netherlands.
International inspirations:
Local inspirations:
Not only are they incredibly inspiring due to their knowledge, but they also give me a warm feeling when I see how photography is a part of someone’s DNA. Ellen and Karin’s contagious enthusiasm motivates me to approach photography similarly while continuing to develop my own style.
Oh, that’s a tough one, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds this hard. Hmm, if I have to choose, I’d go for my photo “Het Rode Bootje”.
This image, according to my followers, evokes a true French coastal vibe. Though I took it on a warm summer evening in Zeeland, I was literally standing in the water for this shot. The result, combined with the moment of capturing it, makes this my favorite photo.

Oof, this might be even harder than choosing my favorite photo. After all, many elements contribute to creating good or beautiful images (in my opinion).
The most important lesson, although it might sound cliché, is to keep practicing. Even though we image creators are used to immediately looking at the results, the process is much more important. And if you ever feel uninspired or stuck, there are countless workshops you can attend.
The second tip is not to forget to enjoy yourself. In today’s digital world, we’re often focused on results (like Instagram likes). But the most important thing in photography is to enjoy the moment, the surroundings, and perhaps the people you’re with. “It’s not a must; it’s a passion.”
The last tip, often underestimated, is that YouTube can be your best friend. If you don’t know something or are curious about a new technique, instructions, or inspiration from other creators, check YouTube. You’ll find thousands of people who’ve gone before you, offering insights and tips.
