1. Who are you, what do you do, and what gear do you prefer to use?

I am Marvin Kranenburg, 39 years old, chef by profession and father of three children. Together with my wife, I live in Anna Paulowna, a beautiful place where I have been enjoying the peace and nature for five years now. Originally, I come from Den Helder.

Gear:

When it comes to photography, I am not exactly a gear freak. I use a Sony A7II and my favourite lenses are from Tamron: the Tamron 300-70 mm f/5.6, Tamron 24 mm f/2.8 and Tamron 35 mm f/2.8. These lenses deliver perfect results in my opinion. A sturdy tripod is essential for me, which is why I use the Benro Mammoth, which ensures that my camera is always stable.

In terms of filters, I use Kase magnetic filters: the ND8, ND64, ND1000 and a polarisation filter. These filters help me achieve the perfect exposure and colour contrasts in my photos.

2. What style of photography do you prefer?

Landscape photography is definitely my favourite style. Every day and every situation offers unique images, and that is what attracts me so much. Every season opens new perspectives, and while it may sound cliché, it remains true. I used to focus on portrait photography, but soon discovered that the unique places in nature are much more fun to capture. From quiet, mystical forests to impressive thunderstorm and storm images; it gives me a thrill every time to apply my experience and techniques to create even better results.

Landscape photography is more than a hobby for me; it has become a lifestyle. Every morning I start by checking the weather to see what the day brings. This ensures that I create new conditions and results every week. Post-processing photos is my favourite part. This is where I can really unleash my creativity and I love learning new techniques and applying them immediately. It's good to be inspired by videos and articles, but the real knowledge comes from experimenting.

3. Who is your big role model/inspiration in terms of photography?

My biggest inspirations in photography are Krystal Wright and Gijs de Reijke. Both have a unique style and know how to capture nature in a beautiful way. Their work inspires me to keep reaching new heights in my own photography.

4. What is your favourite work of yours?

My favourite photograph is ‘Rhododendron Lane with Sun Harps’. This photo possesses everything I like in landscape photography. The light, colours and composition come together perfectly and the result is an enchanting image that captures the essence of landscape photography.

5. What tips / tricks would you like to share with any other photographer?

Tip 1: Set a little high expectations: Try more difficult techniques and get inspiration from expert videos. I learn faster and more by challenging myself and trying new things.

Tip 2: Don't focus too much on gear: Of course it's important to have good equipment, but pay particular attention to assessing the weather, conditions, location and the right time to visit that location. These factors are crucial for taking great photos.

Tip 3: Be patient and invest time: Any landscape photographer will confirm that not only do you need to know everything about your gear, but you also need to be a bit of an amateur weatherman and be well-versed in post-processing techniques. You sometimes have to make sacrifices and invest a lot of time to really make a difference. With the right experience, your (time) investment will always be rewarded in the end.
